The Mufti Al-Ghezzawi meets with the Minister of Environment and the deputies of the Bekaa to restart and activate the sorting plants and secure electricity

In the context of following up on the issues of the Bekaa, the Mufti of Zahle and the Bekaa, Dr. Sheikh Ali Al-Ghezzawi, met on Tuesday, 15th of August, 2023, at Azhar Al-Bekaa, with the honorable Minister of Environment, Dr. Nasser Yassin, His Excellency Deputy Hassan Murad, Dr. Bilal Al-Hashimi, Mr. Yassin Yassin, the Governor of Western Bekaa, Mr. Wasam Nasbih, the President of the Union of Municipalities of Al-Biqa', Mr. Yahya Daher, and the Presidents of the Municipalities of Al-Sahel, Mr. Mohammed Al-Majzoub.
The attendees discussed the urgent developments on the environmental level, especially regarding the issues of waste dumps, emissions, foul odors, and recurrent fires therein, and the resulting toxic and dangerous damages, especially on the people in Western and Central Bekaa. The attendees consulted on proposed short-term and long-term solutions, commending the efforts of His Excellency the Governor of Bekaa, Judge Kamal Abu Jouda, and his follow-up.
They issued the following statement:
- Emphasizing the necessity of restarting and activating the existing sorting plants and ensuring continuous electricity and energy supply for them to operate, sort waste, and recycle.
- Establishing well-studied and protected sanitary landfills to serve as alternatives to current locations.
- Urging the relevant authorities, international and relief organizations, and donor institutions to support, rehabilitate, and operate solid waste facilities, especially since Western and Central Bekaa host large numbers of Syrian brethren, leading to increased pressure on municipal work, to avoid further risks and damages affecting people, the environment, and future generations.
The meeting concluded with the follow-up on the file and developments with the concerned administrations, especially with His Excellency the Governor of Bekaa, and consultations remain open in this regard to achieve the desired and anticipated goal.
